The Reds Sign Number One Pick and a Two Sport Star to a Contract


The Reds beat the deadline for signing those players drafted by a day,  Early Tuesday morning the signed Robert Stephenson,  The Reds also inked dual sports star, Amir Garrett a LHP and college basketball swing m

With the 27th pick overall, the Reds drafted Stephenson out of Alhambra High School in Martinez, California.

            Stephenson, 18, in 13 regular season appearances for Alhambra went 7-2 with a 1.33 ERA, 132 strikeouts and just 23 walks and 29 hits allowed in 64.0 innings. He was named the San Jose Mercury News' Gatorade California Baseball Player of the Year and was rated byBaseball America as the 25th-best prospect in the 2011 first-year player draft.

            Stephenson began this season with back-to-back no-hitters and touched 98 on the radar gun.

            Also Monday, the Reds agreed to terms on a dual-sport contract with LHP Amir Garrett (6-5, 210), 19, selected in the 22nd round out of Findlay College Prep in Henderson, Nevada.

            An All-American basketball player and ranked the 68th-best player in last year's recruiting class, Garrett also intends to play basketball at St. John's University.
