Mike Leake has a streak of five straight quality starts when he took the mound in the nations capitol.
The Reds scored two in the first inning. Drew Stubbs back in the leadoff spot with Yonder Alonso getting the start in left, singled against Chien-Ming Wang to open the game. While Joey Votto was batting, Stubbs stole his 29th base of the season. Votto walked. Brandon Phillips flew out to right. Jay Bruce, who was named Player of the Week, singled to score Stubbs. Ramon Hernandez singled off the glove of Jayson Werth in left field to give Leake a quick 2-0 lead.
The Nationals came right back. Rick Ankiel's fly ball dropped in front of Alonso in the spacious National Park outfield. It may have been catchable but one of Alonso's drawbacks is his lack of speed. Danny Espinosa flied to Alonso. Ryan Zimmerman hit a ground ball up the middle that Edgar Renteria stopped but he couldn't get the ball out of his glove in time to get Ankiel on the force. David Morse doubled on a ball to right, on which Bruce started in. It fell for a double that left runners on second and third. Leake struck out former Red, Laynce Nix but Ian Desmond singled home two run to give the Nationals a lead they kept.
Morse homered off Leake in the third. Wilson Ramos scored on an error by Votto in the fourth. Zimmerman hit a long ball off Leake in the fifth.
Leake finished with six innings, allowing five earned runs (6 total) on seven hits and a walk. The defense cost him three runs.
Bruce grounded out to get Votto home in the sixth. Edgar Renteria doubled home Fred Lewis, who singled for Leake in the seventh. Renteria had to leave the game when he pulled his groin on the hit.
The Reds got no closer, dropping the first game of this nine game road trip.
