Baseball Is Back But Who Will Make Up The Reds Roster?

General Manager Nick Krall revealed 57 players who will make up the Reds this Covid abbreviated season of 60 games beginning July 24.

On Friday these players will be divided with 35 players working out in closed sessions at Great American Ball Park and 22 will work out at Prasco Park in Warren County.

All 57 players will compete for the 30 players who will fill the roster when the season starts.  Teams will be allowed 30 players for two weeks.  The number will be reduced to 28 for the next two weeks.  Two weeks later the team must cut two more players who will make up the 26-man every-day roster. This is an increase of one player from the rosters size used for decades.  Ironically, the roster was already scheduled to increase from the traditional 25-man roster.

Major League Baseball allows the designation of 60 players for the season.  The Reds will be working with 57 players for the time being but it can add three more players.  Derek Dietrich is not among the players at this time but could be added.  Blake has decided to retire.  Vladimir Guitierrez was suspended for using a banned substance.

"We divided the roster to add balance to workouts," Krall said.  "Whether the player works out at Great American Ball Park or Prasco Park is not an indication of the players chances to make the team."

The schedule for the 2020 season has been submitted to the Players Association to be approved. The Reds will play 40 games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs.  That would work out to eight games, four home and four away.   The Reds would play the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox a total of 20 times, or four times each, two at home and two away.  Each team is permitted to schedule three "pre-season games.

The requirements for using position players to pitch has been waived as is the new rule that puts a limit on the number of pitchers on the roster.  Each team must designate its active roster before each game but teams will be allowed to carry three "taxi squad" players, one of which should be a catcher.

There will be a 10-game and 45-game Injured list with no 60-day IL.  A player who test positive for Covid will be ineligible and quarantined for two weeks.  They can not return until they test negative twice.

Still the Great American Group consisting of 19 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders and six outfielders features the most prominent Reds' players.
