Oakland Athletics Hire Son and Fire Dad

The Oakland Athletics drafted Brett Geren, a catcher, from San Ramon Valley High School on Wednesday.

He is the quintesential chip off the old block. His father, Bob, was drafted in 1979 by the San Diego Padres in the first round. Brett was picked 1,275 picks later than his dad. Father and son were both catchers that were raised in the Bay Area. Bob broke in with the New York Yankees in 1988 and played for five seasons.

On Thursday the A's fired Bob Geren after a season-high nine game losing streak.

Geren, 49, had a 334-376 record in four-plus seasons with Oakland, including a 27-36 mark this season that has the A's standing in last place, eight games out of first in the American League West

Former Seattle and Arizona manager, Bob Melvin was named interim manager.
