The Reds were worried about Travis Wood after his awful last outing against the Dodgers. Wood is youthful but is a cool customer, who doesn't get rattled.
The second-year lefty pitched eight innings and bent but never broke. Wood allowed 11 hits but kept San Francisco off the board for the most part. He left with the game tied 2-2.
Veteran Ryan Vogelsong, who seems to have put his game together, kept the offensive minded Reds in check as well.
The Giants opened the scoring on a ground rule double by Miguel Tejada and a run scoring single by Cody Ross in the first inning. Chris Heisey, who took his turn starting in left field, threw Ross out attempting to stretch it into a double.
The Reds scored the next two runs.
Scott Rolen belted his second triple of the year to the expansive gap in right center field, leading off the fourth. Chris Heisey walked. Ryan Hanigan, who makes the most of his RBI opportunities, singled to score Rolen. The Reds missed a chance to continue to score. Hanigan's hit that scored the run left two on with no outs but the Reds wouldn't dent the plate any more in the inning.
The Reds scored but failed to maximize a golden opportunity the next inning. Brandon Phillips singled. On the play Freddie Sanchez, former batting champion, suffered a separated shoulder making a diving stop. Joey Votto walked. Jay Bruce singled too hard to allow Phillips to score. Rolen struck out. Heisey hit a slow roller that got the run home but became the second out. The Reds couldn't get the big two-out hit.
The Giants got even in the bottom of the fifth. Miguel Tejada doubled again to drive in the tying run.
Freddie Lewis led off the ninth with a pinch hit single off Brian Wilson. Drew Stubbs struck out and Phillips hit into a double play.
Jose Arredondo, who has pitched well since coming off the defense. Arredondo, a brilliant signing by Walt Jocketty, walked Andres Torres. Manny Burris bunted him to second. The hot hitting Tejada was intentionally walked. Bill Bray came on to fan rookie lefthanded hitting, Brandon Crawford. Big Logan Ondrusek came in. Ondrusek walked Cody Ross on five pitches. Nate Schierholtz singled to left to give the Giants its ninth walk off win in 29 home games.
