The Reds fought around a defensive miscue to win its third straight game. This time the Minnesota Twins were the 6-5 victims as the Reds won 38-35 record to win eight of their last 10 games.
Reds' starter Andrew Abbott was coming off his first career complete-game shutout. He allowed the 12th home run of the season to Byron Buxton, who had robbed Will Benson of a home run in the bottom of the second, in the third inning.
"They say the same things that make you laugh, make you cry," Terry Francona said. "We get four when we should probably get the third out. Then they do the exact same thing to us. We made some mistakes but we did some good things. They are in a place where they're fighting and I love that. It's not only going to be perfect."
Twins' starter David Festa retired the first eight Reds' batters before Matt McLain walked.
Gavin Lux walked to open the Reds' fourth inning. Elly De La Cruz forced him at second base. De La Cruz stole second as Tyler Stephenson walked. One out later Benson lined a double to the gap in left center to put the Reds in the lead. It was the first hit of the game for Cincinnati. Spencer Steer struck out by swinging through a change up. The ball eluded catcher Ryan Jeffers and Steer reached first, then stole second. He scored along with Benson on a single by Jake Fraley.
Abbott breezed through the first 5 2/3 innings. He retired the first two batters in the sixth. Christian Encarnacion-Strand errant throw on a potential inning ending ground ball by Ty France. Brooks Lee extended his hitting streak to 16 games by punching a single to left. Trevor Larnach hit an RBI single that got past a diving McLain. Harrison Bader hit a long fly to right that was over the fence in right but Fraley got his glove on it but it was jarred loose as he hit the wall and former Red Bader put the Twins ahead 5-4.
That was when Abbott left the game.
"He (Bader) hit it well. I didn't think it would go too far," Fraley said. "I switched my hips then I thought I'm probably going to have to jump because it kept carrying. It just didn't stick in my glove."
"I credit my defense a lot. I still give them credit. They've done a lot for me," Abbott said. We all have our days. Those guys will put in the work and come back tomorrow."
"I feel like we're turning the corner, The at bats are getting longer the pitching both starters and relievers have stepped up," Abbott said. "I located a couple pitches and they hit them where no one was. I'm just trying to get the next out and not over think it."
Abbott finished with 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and no walks. He gave up one earned run and four unearned runs. Abbott's ERA actually dropped from 1.87 to 1.84.
Scott Barlow got the final out of the inning.
The Reds took Abbott off the hook in the bottom of the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Fraley and McLain singled. TJ Friedl hit a ball to the gap in right center, Matt Wallner the right fielder tried to make a diving catch but it rolled to the wall for a two-run double.
Barlow got credit for the win. "He got us four really big outs," Francona said.
