"Fulmer was pitching a good game. He made a little mistake. Scooter put a good swing on it," Suarez said. "That was a really good feeling. Scooter is doing his job and I'm doing mine. It is really fun."
Tyler Mahle led the Reds to wins in his last four starts coming into the game. He was credited with two winning decisions and dropped his ERA to a season-low 3.96 at game time.
Mahle has been giving up home runs at high rate this season. He has been more aggressive.," Reds' manager Jim Riggleman said. "Tyler did a great job. It seemed like more but if he gives us six innings, it gives us a chance to use the bullpen they way we want to use it."
"We've been giving up home runs as a staff but if you give up a solo home run, you can still shut down and inning
The rookie left after six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks, though one was intentional. Amir Garrett and Michael Lorenzen combined to turn in a scoreless inning.
Jeimer Candelario hit his 11th home run in the first inning. Niko Goodrum hit his seventh home run in the fourth. They were solo shots that tied Mahle with Homer Bailey for the team lead with 15 which is also tied for fourth in the NL. The key is they were solo home runs, in the style of Tom Browning and Bronson Arroyo, who were always among the leaders in home runs but challenged hitters with strikes.
"I'm glad I didn't let it get out of hand," Mahle said. "I got the first out on a strikeout with three straight strikes. Maybe I should have started the second hitter with a pitch a little off the plate to get him to chase, then the inning is different. I feel like it should have been 0-0 going into the sixth. If I had to give myself a grade it would be a D. I was missing too much with my fastball."
The Reds added an insurance run against the Detroit bullpen in the seventh. Billy Hamilton, Schebler and Tucker Barnhart singled to score one run off Alex Wilson. Joey Votto, who tied Frank Robinson for eighth place on the Reds with 1,502 games played, walked to load the bases with none out.
Gennett lined out to right field. Tigers' manager Ron Gardenhire summoned Blaine Hardy, who joined the team this morning. Hardy escaped by getting Suarez to pop to the shortstop in shallow left and pinch hitter Alex Blandino on a strikeout.
The Tigers scored against Jared Hughes on a pair of two out hits that totaled less than 90 feet.
JaCoby Jones hit a high chop to the third base side of the mound. The 6'5" Hughes went after it. Saurez tried to call him off but inadvertently knocked the ball out of Hughes hand for an infield single. Jose Iglesias hit a chopper in front of the plate fielded by Barnhart. Not only did Iglesias beat the throw to first. Jones saw an unprotected home plate and raced for home, scoring without a throw.
Adam Duvall reclaimed the run with his 12th home run, coming against Johnny Barbato.
Raisel Iglesias earned his 11th save in 13 tries with a scoreless ninth.
