Reds Trade Paul Janish to Atlanta Braves for a Pitcher
The Reds traded last year's starting shortstop, Paul Janish, for RHP Todd Redmond.
Janish began the 2011 as the Reds' starting shortstop but was beaten out by Zack Cozart for the job this spring. Janish is in his last option year and spent the entire season at Triple A Louisville.
Janish was hitting above .300 for the Bats when he broke his right wrist on April 30th. He will leave the Bats with a .237 batting average with four home runs and 11 RBI.
The trade will allow Didi Gregorius to develop at shortstop.
Todd Redmond
Redmond, 27 6'3" 215 lbs, is 6-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 18 starts for Triple A Gwinnett. He had one complete game. Redmond was selected in the 40th round of the amatuer player draft by Kansas City in 2003. Redmond is from St. Petersburg, Florida. He threw a no-hitter against the Louisville Bats two years ago.
"Redmond will provide us with starting pitching depth in the minor leagues," Walt Jocketty said. "It is also a great opportunity for Paul to get back to the Major Leagues. The Braves has some injuries and inquired about Paul. He had been playing secondbase since we promoted Gregorius to Louisville. We felt he deserved a chance to play in the Major Leagues and unfortunately it wasn't going to be with us. It also gives us starting pitching depth in an emergency. Redmond is a big strong guy that pitches a lot of innings. He's a big strong guy, who has a good fastball, curve and changeup with good command."
Jocketty is still trying to find a leadoff and cleanup hitter.
"We have lots of talks but nothing is imminent. It will difficult this year. It is a seller's market. I would like to get a cleanup and leadoff hitter. I don't think we could do both. I'd like to do one of them," Jocketty said.
