Bronson Arroyo took an no-hitter and a three-run lead into the eighth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers 10 days ago.
He lost the no-hitter in the eighth. Asked if that upset him being so close to a no-hitter and not get it.
"It didn't even factor into the equation," Arroyo said. "I am glad the team has been winning but on a personal level, I've only got three wins next to my name. It's frustrating."
On Friday night the frustration was metered out by Arroyo with the San Diego Padres' players walking to their bench bewildered and frustrated in the 6-0 Cincinnati win.. San Diego managed but three singles off a razor sharp Arroyo, who went all the way for his fourth win of the season and his fifth career shutout, marking the team's ninth straight quality start.
It was the third game in a row that the Reds faced one of its former pitchers. Aaron Harang beat them Wednesday night 4-1. Edinson Volquez did not get a decision but allowed the Reds just one run in the Padres' walk-off 2-1 win on Thursday.
You can see a pattern in the one run. On Friday they faced Kip Wells, who was recently added to the San Diego roster to cover for injuries to the starting rotaton.
Wells gave up Zack Cozart's ninth home run to leadoff the game Wells was in charge from then until the Reds breakthrough seventh inning.
No one scored until the seventh when Ryan Hanigan turned one of Wells' breaking balls into a two-run home run.
Bronson was very upset that he didn't hold onto the Reds 3-0 lead in the June 28th game at Great American Ball Park. He missed his chance to add a victory to his name when the Brewers caught the Reds with three runs in the eighth inning. The Reds came back to win the game.
The Reds' hitters responded once the lid was lifted off home plate by Hanigan's second blast of the season.
Todd Frazier added his ninth home run with a man on in the eighth and Joey Votto's 35th double of the year scored Drew Stubbs. Stubbs doubled to snap a horrendous 32 at bat hitless steak.
It was up to Arroyo to author his 11th career complete game as he completed the shutout, allowing three hits and a walk. Arroyo struck out eight in his 110-pitch gem.
The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a one-run decision to the San Francisco Giants to allow the Reds back to within a game. The Reds moved to within one-game of to the first place Pirates.
