I am a freelance writer. I've covered the Cincinnati Reds, Bengals and others since 1992.
I have a background in sales as well. I've sold consumer electronics, advertising and consumer package goods for companies ranging from the now defunct Circuit City to Procter&Gamble.
I have worked as a stats operator for Xavier University, the University of Cincinnati, the College of Mount St. Joe and Colerain High School.
The Reds selected Nick Travieso, righthanded pitcher from Archbishop McCarthy High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida. The Mavericks won the Florida State High School baseball title the last three seasons.
Travieso is 6'2" tall and weighs in at 215 pounds. His fastball is clocked between 93-95 mph but has reached 99 on more than one occasion. When Travieso was not pitching he played firstbase.
His father Dan was a college pitcher at a small college in New York. Travieso grew up a New York Yankees fan since his parents grew up in Manhattan.
The 18-year old had a scholarship to the University of Miami but said that he will sign with the Reds.
"It is amazing being drafted at all," Travieso said in a conference call. "I honestly had no clue if I would be taken or when. I am happy to be taken by the Reds."
Travieso's teammate at McCarthy High was Nick Arias, the son of the Reds' Director of South American Scouting.
This was the second consecutive year the Reds have taken a high school pitcher with its first draft pick. They selected Robert Stephenson with the 27th pick last year. Stephenson is in extended spring training and likely to be assigned to either Billings or the AZL Reds
