Joey Votto On The Road To Pawtucket

Joey Votto is flying.

Votto is traveling to Pawtuckett to join the Louisville Bats in that New England city for a rehabilitation assignment, in an effort to get back to playing baseball at full strength for the Cincinnati Reds.

Votto has been out of action since May 16 with soreness and weakness in his left quad area.

The length of his stay with the Bats will be determined by daily evaluation.

"We want to test his knee and quad to see how they hold up," Bryan Price said.  "Then we evaluate it to see not only how it feels after the game but the next day."

Votto has been trying to rebuild strength in that area of his body.

"We are looking for how he responds to the rigors of a normal game, the quick starts in the field and out of the batters box, getting up and down, being hot and then cooling down," Price said. "We have made an investment to get him healthier."

The investment has come at the expense of an anemic offense.

The Reds are 9-11 with Votto out and have scored at total of 60 runs (3 per game) and have been shutout three times.

"We've missed an impact player both offensively and defensively," Price said.

Todd Frazier has played a very good thirdbase all season but has looked lost at firstbase.

"It looks like it would be easy but it is different," Price said of moving across the diamond to play defense. "Todd is better than he has played at firstbase.  I didn't have any reservations and still don't about putting him over there."
