Mt. St. Joe's James Clay is the Nation's Best

The nation's most productive running back is not at the football factories of Ann Arbor, Michigan or Columbus, Ohio but on a tiny field in Delhi with NCAA Division III College of Mount St. Joe.

Mt. St. Joe Senior James Clay
The Mt. St. Joe Lions James Clay, a 5'10" 190 lb senior from Louisville dupont Manuel High School, leads the entire NCAA in rushing yards per game and all purpose rushing yards and yards per game.

Clay's 1,025 through four games is second only to Zach Zenner of Division I AA South Dakota State.  Zenner has rushed for 1,077 yards but has played five games.  Clay holds a per game average of 256 yards per game.  Zenner's is 215 over five games.

The senior set a MSJ and HCAC single-game rushing record with 342 yards, eclipsing the old HCAC mark of 296 yards set three previous times.  Clay’s four touchdowns (41, 58, 14, 75 yards) tied a MSJ single-game record that was set in 2003. For the day, Clay totaled 405 all-purpose yards, including 342 on the ground, 14 kickoff return yards, and 49 punt return yards. This season, the senior tailback has 1,205 rushing yards (leads all NCAA divisions) and 12 touchdowns.

Clay finished the 2011 season with 1,132 yards in 144 carries, averaging 7.9 yards per rush with 16 touchdowns.

"Clay had a great off-season," according to head coach Rod Huber.  "He improved his strength, speed and agility."
