I am a freelance writer. I've covered the Cincinnati Reds, Bengals and others since 1992.
I have a background in sales as well. I've sold consumer electronics, advertising and consumer package goods for companies ranging from the now defunct Circuit City to Procter&Gamble.
I have worked as a stats operator for Xavier University, the University of Cincinnati, the College of Mount St. Joe and Colerain High School.
The Reds lost a 1-0 game to the St. Louis Cardinals on the last day of the season but you could sense a collective exhale from the Reds.
They finished one game off baseball's best record at 97-65, a full 10 games ahead of the Cardinals. The top seed belongs to the Washington Nationals, putting the Reds in San Francisco to play the pitching rich Giants.
The Reds finished three games better than the Giants, 94-68. The Reds won four of the seven games between the teams during the season. The Reds ranked third in pitching and the Giants fifth. The Giants finished third in hitting and the Reds finished ninth. The Giants scored 49 more runs than the Reds did this season.
Many worried that the Reds' September hitting slump is going to continue but veteran Scott Rolen offered the following; "When I was on the Cardinals World Champion team (2006), we were playing the worst baseball of the season going into the playoffs. The playoffs are a crap shoot anyway. The winner is the team that gets hot at the right time. We just need to play."
The Reds were swept in three games by the Philadelphia Phillies two years ago and suffered the indignity of a no-hitter in the first game, pitched by Roy Halladay.
"We got swept last time and had a no-hitter throw against us," said Brandon Phillips, who was the last out of the masterpiece. "We can only have a better playoff this time."
