Rockies Rain Home Runs on Reds in 10-7 Win

Four two-run home runs and a single that scored a runner from first supplied Colorado with the offense it needed to drown the reeling Reds.

They added a run scoring double in the ninth inning for good measure.

Carlos Gonzalez was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list two days ago and hit the deciding blow off lefty specialist Bill Bray with Dexter Fowler on base.  It was the first home run allowed by Bray this season.  Gonzalez's 16th long ball of the season joined two-run homers by Todd Helton, Seth Smith and Seth Smith again.  Troy Tulowitzki had two doubles among his three hits.  It was the fifth straight multi-hit game.

"Bill Bray has been throwing the ball well," Dusty Baker said.  "It was the first home run he's given up to a lefty.  It is the timing of it that is frustrating.  We battled back but we couldn't keep the ball in the park"

The Reds started out strong against Jason Hammel.  Jay Bruce hit his 22nd home run with two men on in the first inning.  It was his first home run in nearly a month.  He hit his 21st July 9 in Milwaukee.

Homer Bailey gave up the first of Smith's two home runs in the second inning.  Bailey had gone three games without allowing a home run.

"He hit some good pitches.  The first one he went down and got.  He hit an inside pitch for his second home run," Bailey said.  "He had my number tonight.  It's frustrating because we are a better team than our record indicates."

Helton singled home Ellis in the third preceding Smith's second home run.

One out later rain delayed the game an hour and 34 minutes.

Bailey, who has spent two tours on the disabled list, did not return. It forced Baker to use his tired bullpen to finish up the last six innings.

"We were protecting Homer," Baker said.  "He threw every few minutes so he threw about six innings altogether.  We didn't want to go to our bullpen.  Everybody is tired this time of year.  We have to battle through it.  They don't call it the dog days of August for nothing.  We battled but we just couldn't keep them in the park."

Hammel survived the rain but was greeted rudely in the bottom of the third.

Edgar Renteria doubled when play resumed.  Bruce singled him home for his fourth RBI.  Drew Stubbs lined his 15th home run to left to give the Reds the lead back.

Sam LeCure had 12 outings covering 31 1/3 innings allowing just three runs (0.86 ERA) until poor defense led to a five run outing on Saturday.  He gave up Helton's 13th home run after Tulowitzki doubled.

Brandon Phillips, limited to pinch hitting duty with a strained right ankle, tied the game with his second career pinch hit home run in the seventh off Rex Brothers.  The Reds put runners on second and third with two outs but former Red Matt Belisle struck out Todd Frazier to earn the win as he was the pitcher of record when Gonzalez hit his home run off Bray.
