The Reds reassigned Lyon Richardson to the minor league camp.
The 26-year old split his time in the big leagues and the minor leagues for the last three seasons. He pitched well at times but has shown some inconsistency.
In the last three seasons, Richardson, the Reds' second round pick in the 2018 draft from Jensen Beach, Florida, pitched in 39 games. He started four games in 2023. Every other appearance has been in relief.
Richardson is still looking for his first Major League win. He is 0-5 with 6.05 ERA over 55 innings. Last season he worked in 34 games and finished 11 in a "mop up" role.
He made three trips to the Reds from Louisville last season but removed from the 40-man roster in the off season. Richardson was invited to the big league camp as a non-roster player.
"We told him not to let the frustration get in the way of your pitching," Terry Francona said. "He pitched some good games for us last year. We want him to be more consistent with his two seamer so he's not pitching behind 2-0 and 2-1 a lot."
This spring he pitched in six Cactus League games covering 7 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, five earned for a 5.87 ERA. Richardson gave up 12 hits and walked four with seven strikeouts.
The move leaves the Reds with 21 pitchers on the roster with Caleb Ferguson out with a strained oblique and Kyle Nicolas pitching for Team Italy. Tejay Antone, Hagen Danner both right handers and lefty Anthony Misiewicz are the remaining non-roster pitchers still in camp.
