Reds Pitching Starting to Gel in 6-1 Win Over Houston

Travis Wood became the second starter in as many days to avoid a score.

The Reds pitching as a whole went 16 innings without allowing a run.  Wood pitched 6 2/3 innings but left after a bloop single by Angel Sanches.  Bill Bray allowed a hit to load the bases but Logan Ondrusek pitched out of it.

The streak ended when Hunter Pence hit a fly ball into the first row of the rightfield seats in Minute Made Park.  The ball glanced off the glove of the leaping Jay Bruce.

Wood and firstbaseman Ramon Hernandez, yes firstbaseman Ramon Hernandez also hit home runs to give the Reds a lead.

Wood followed a double by Chris Valaika and a single by Ryan Hanigan with a long home run to left.  Wood, an excellent all around athlete, also his a home run off Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals last season.  He hit one in spring training also.  Hernandez, who gave Joey Votto his first day off of the season, extended his hitting streak to six games with a home run with Fred Lewis on base.  Drew Stubbs took over the team lead with his 19 RBI when he singled Valaika home.

Brandon Phillips turned in his daily highlight defensive play with a diving catch behind secondbase. Chris Johnson lined out behind second but Phillips turned it into an out to save Wood a run.

Mike Leake made his first relief appearance with a 1-2-3 ninth.
