Homer Bailey grew up in La Grange, Texas 102 miles from Houston.
When Bailey was younger than he is now, he would be in the stands dreaming about pitching for the Astros. On Tuesday he pitched in Houston for the first time in his career. He had two starts against the Astros but both were at Great American Ball Park.
On Tuesday in front of family and friends, Bailey, dominated just like he did at La Grange High School. He pitched seven scoreless innings, continuing a trend that Cincinnati starters began on this road trip. Reds starting pitchers have not allowed a run in the last three games. Going back to Bronson Arroyo's start on Saturday, the starters have allowed just one run in 26 2/3 innings.
Bailey allowed five hits and no walks. He also followed Travis Wood's lead by hitting a single. Wood hit a three-run home run on Monday night.
Joey Votto took his first day off on Monday and Dusty Baker's decision to rest him, paid off. Votto had three hits and three RBI on a pair of doubles and a single. Jay Bruce hit his eighth home run, a two-run bomb in his hometown for his sixth home run in his last 14 games.
Every Red starter had at least one hit. Super sub Miguel Cairo had three hits and was on base five times. Jonny Gomes had two hits.
The Reds have won six of its last seven games and are four games over .500 at 20-16.
