Eugenio Suarez Chases His Mother's Hero. Jesse Winker On The Mend

Eugenio Suarez has things to do and goals to complete.  He can't just sit around and nurse the swollen left hand.

Suarez reached the 40 home run plateau in the first game of the Reds' doubleheader in St. Louis on Sunday.  He has 87 RBI and wants to reach 100 over the last 23 games.

Daniel Ponce de Leon hit him in his third plate appearance and he has been out of action ever since.

"I was out to see him when it happened," David Bell said.  "I thought it was broken."

The MRI showed a contusion.  He missed the first two games against the Philadelphia Phillies.  He is not in the lineup for the third game but he is taking batting practice and is available according to Bell.

Suarez reached his goal of 40 home runs which created a new career-high after clubbing 34 last season.  He set a new goal.  Suarez, born in Venezuela, is high on the list for home runs in a season among his countrymen.  Andres Galarraga is at the top of the list with 47 home runs in 1996, the most by a Venezuelan native.  Galarraga is Suarez' mothers favorite player or maybe second favorite to her son."He

The former first baseman for the Montreal Expos, Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants, eclipsed 40 home runs three straight years for Colorado.  He hit 41 in 1997 and 44 in 1998.  Suarez would like to please his mother and be the first Venezuelan to hit 48.

Jesse Winker, out with a left shoulder ailment, is close to returning even this late in the season.

"He is a couple of days away from starting to swing.  It could happen pretty fast," Bell said.  "It back he's made some great strides this year.  He made some nice adjustments.  It will be good to get him back for a couple weeks."
