Soggy Bottom Game Goes To Reds

The sun would rise again whether the NL West last place San Diego Padres and the NL Central cellar dwellers sludged through the Reds 141st game of the season.  The Reds' prevailed 7-2 over the Padres from the arid southwest.

The Reds turned the sloppy game with an early start time into rout with a flood of offense in the second inning.  Young left-hander Robbie Erlin was the wet-behind-the-ear victim of the Reds' seven-run inning.

Eugenio Suarez singled to open the inning. Phil Ervin, who homered twice and executed a squeeze bunt, flew out to right.  Curt Casli singled with Suarez advancing to third.  Brandon Dixon singled to score Suarez.  Matt Harvey, the Reds' starting pitcher, laid down a sacrifice attempt that wasn't fielded.  Harvey legged out the hit.  Billy Hamilton's fly to right scored Casali.  Scott Schebler, who hit a grand slam on Friday, singled to score Dixon.  Jose Peraza singled to load the bases.  Joey Votto unloaded the bases with his 10th home run of the season and second grand slam.

Votto's home run was his first since July 9, 36 games ago. (Votto hit a home run in the All-Star game.) He once had a 40-game homerless in 2012.  His 10 home runs is Votto's lowest total in any season in which he has played more than 62 games.  Votto hit six home runs in 62 games in 2014.  He hit four home runs in 24 games as a September call up in 2007.   Votto's lowest home total other than those two season was in 2012 when he was limited to 111 games by injury.  He hit 14 that season.

The Padres got two runs back on Eric Hosmer's 15th home run with a man on in the fourth inning.  San Diego loaded the bases but Harvey struck out Francisco Mejia and Freddy Galvis to maintain the 7-2 lead.

Votto walked to lead off the sixth against Robert Stock.  It was his 100th walk of the year.  He has walked 100 times in a season for the sixth time, tying Joe Morgan's team record.

Rain caused a delay that turned into an official game in the seventh inning.
