Michael Lorenzen Homers and Pitches As Reds Lose Slugfest

The Reds jumped all over Milwaukee Brewers' starter Wade Miley but the Reds couldn't hold the lead in a 16-14 slug fest loss, that rivaled scoring in the March Madness games on TV.

There were 36 hits, 21 by the Reds.  Reds pitchers allowed 54 base runners.

"It was a good offensive day but an ugly defensive day," said Bryan Price.

Phil Gosselin and Adam Duvall singled before Brandon Dixon walked and Jesse Winker hit a two-run double.  In the second inning, Tucker Barnhart singled but was forced at second on Michael Lorenzen's attempted sacrifice.  Billy Hamilton, Gosselin singled to score Lorenzen.  Joey Votto hit a sacrifice fly to left field.  Duvall doubled scoring Gosselin. Brandon Dixon contributed a single.  Winker's single gave the Reds a 6-0 lead.

Michael Lorenzen, who is trying to make the starting rotation, pitched two scoreless innings but his control left him. He walked two in the second but got out of the inning.  The Brewers used two walks and two hits to score two in the third.

The walks set the table for the Brewers.

"He was erratic,' Price said.  "He tried to find his release point in the second inning.  He didn't have a pitch he could go to for strikes."

Lorenzen hit a long home run off Miley in the bottom of the third to get one of the runs back, then turned the game over to Jackson Stephens, who turned the lead over to the Brewers with the help of Kyle Crockett.

A throwing error by Dixon cost Stephens and unearned run.  The Brewers scored seven in the sixth to take a 10-8 lead.  Stephens gave up a home run to Ji-Man Choi.

Stephens was charged with six runs, five earned in 2 2/3 innings.  Crockett was charged with two runs in 1/3 inning.

Barnhart hit a sacrifice fly off Boone Logan with Dixon on third and Jose Perara, who hit a ground rule double.  Peraza was thrown out trying to score from second.

The Reds tied the game in the bottom of the inning off Gosselin singled.  Tony Cruz and Duvall walked against Jacob Barnes.

Nick Franklin hit a two-run home run off Dylan Floro in the seventh.  The Brewers scored a third run on a throwing error by Nick Senzel.

The Reds got one run back when Cruz scored from first on a single by Phillip Ervin that got past the leftfielder, Kyle Wren.

Floro was asked to cover more innings because of short outings by Lorenzen, Stephens and Crockett.

Jimmy Herget entered after the Brewers got to Floro for another run in the eighth.

Kevin Shackelford was victimized for two more runs in the ninth.

The Reds used three defensive indifferences in the ninth inning.  No one in the pressbox was sure if it was a record.

Mason Williams singled and took second on a DI.  Ervin singled him home.  Ervin took second on a DI and scored on a single by Alex Blandino.  Joe Hudson walked.  Minor leaguer Michael Beltre ran for Hudson.  Nick Senzel singled but Beltre was caught between second and third for the final out.

Notes:  Romano pitched four innings in a minor league game.  He gave up nine hits, including a home run.  He allowed three runs but struck out six.
