Tony Cingrani New Delivery Key

As a pitching coach for 15 years, developing some of the best pitching staffs in baseball, he knows what he is talking about.

Promising left-handed pitcher Tony Cingrani, pitched a gem in his first start against the St. Louis Cardinals last season. He pitched seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 win but his season went downhill with discomfort in his left shoulder.

Price is looking for the cause to see that the shoulder stays strong longer.

"When a player has an injury, you look at his delivery as a way  to rectify the issue," Price said.  "The wear and tear, the rigors of pitching tend to lead everybody down that road at some point in their career.  Tony is an interesting subject in that he has a delivery where his arm comes through a little bit late. That creates great deception and movement on his ball.  One of the reasons that he can throw 80 percent fastballs and have success is that deception.  Sometimes you worry that if you clean the guy up (with mechanics) you lose that deception. You lose that thing that is special.  He cruised through the minor leagues to the Major Leagues and had success. We've worried about his delivery since we drafted him."

Price talked of John Tudor and Sid Fernandez that didn't even have Cingrani's velocity that got a lot of swings and misses with rising fastballs.

"Tony has that same gift it is what makes him special," Price said.  "We wonder whether we need to address his delivery or look at it as a strength deficit."

The Reds are trying both.

"Homer, in my opinion, I felt his delivery was pretty good," Price said. "Yet he had those recurring shoulder problems in 2010 and 2011.  He got on a shoulder strengthening program, as did Johnny Cueto.  It has made their shoulder issues and thing of the past."

Cingrani has been focusing on mechanics.   He pitched two scoreless innings against the Cubs on Friday.

"My arm gets loose easier," Cingrani said. "I threw some good pitches, two at 94.  You can't be unhappy with that."
