Joey Votto Not Playing In Games While Getting Into Baseball Shape"

Joey Votto will not be appearing in games the first few days of the Cactus League.

Votto is behind the rest of the players in camp because he has been rehabbing his surgically repaired quadricep rather swinging in a batting cage and taking ground balls.

While there are no restrictions, he needs to get enough reps to catch up to the other players, according to Bryan Price.

"It's just durability. We wouldn't have guys come to spring training, having started doing baseball work on February first and then firing them into games," Price said.  "These goes are doing a lot of strength training number one but they getting into a new year, taking ground balls and swinging the bat. Those are something that he started later than the rest of the guys.

He hasn't done the agility drills yet, moving lateral, cutting, sliding early in the spring.

"He's incorporating all those things into his game early in the spring," Price said. "We just want to make sure we are getting off on the right foot from a durability standpoint.  Beyond the injury fatigue played a large role in his inability to be on the field last year, fatigue and :pain.  We want to build him up to appropriate strength."

Josh Satin (pronounced SAT in) will start at firstbase against the Indians and bat ninth. Satin played for the New York Mets in parts of four seasons, hitting .243 in 116 games with three home runs and 22 RBI. He was the Mets' sixth round pick in the 2008 draft out of the University of California where he was All-American and All Pac-10 in both his freshman and senior years.
