Unemployed bench coach under Dusty Baker is no longer on the outside looking in.

The Reds hired Chris Speier to be a special assist to general manager Walt Jocketty.

Speier was the Reds bench coach under Dusty Baker and managed the Reds the last few weeks of 2012 when Baker was hospitalized with a mild stroke.

Speier was the manager for the game that clinched the National League Central Division title that season.

His new duties will include Major League scouting and on-field instruction in the minor leagues.
