Mike Leake was supposed to make his first start of the spring on Sunday, instead the Reds sent Brett Marshall, who pitched in three games for the New York Yankees last season.
Leake strained his abdominal muscle during his conditioning workouts about a month ago. It didn't bother him during his bullpens and lifting until he was long tossing before a bullpen session two days ago.

Leake feels fine and expects to pitch a bullpen Wednesday in preparation for a start next Friday against either the White Sox or Mariners.
"We just didn't want to chance it," Leake. "I've had it a month but didn't feel it until a long toss throw about a week ago. It is getting better every day. I'm not concerned about it and don't think anyone else is either."
Brett Marshall, a right-hander, was claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on February 12. The Cubs signed Jason Hammel and James McDonald.
Marshall is 23-years old until March 22. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the sixth round in 2008. Marshall pitched in mop up duty on May against Seattle with 5 2/3 innings in which he allowed five earned runs. He pitched two more games in September after the roster expanded. In total, Marshall pitched 12 innings, allowing seven runs with seven walks and seven strikeouts.
The Yankees asked waivers on him on December 23, when the Cubs claimed him.
Marshall walked two and struck out one in two scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres split squad.
