The Reds Come From Behind To Beat Brewers
Cesar Izturis hit a solo home run and singled in a run in the Reds' two-run eighth as the Reds came from behind to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-5.
Very few starters were in the lineup to back Homer Bailey.
Bailey was scheduled to pitch three innings but left after two.
“He had a 30-pitch inning that first inning. We didn’t want to give him another inning and took him out," Dusty Baker said. "He threw the ball real good. He just couldn’t put them away. I think three of their hits were two-strike hits.”
Henry Rodriguez made his fifth error of the spring and coupled with Jason Donald failed to turn two potential double play balls that would have bailed Bailey out.
Bailey, allowed three runs on four hits but only one was earned.
“We won but it’s hard to win like that. We missed some signs. We just have to tighten up our game.,” Baker said.
The Reds had lost seven straight before beating the Brewers for the second time.
Milwaukee carried a 5-4 lead into the eighth after Izturis hit a line shot over the leftfield fence off Travis Webb, who spent seven seasons in the Reds' system before signing with the Brewers this winter.
Donald Lutz singled to start the eighth against Johnny Hellweg. Mike Hessman reached on a throwing error by Bobby Crosby. Kristopher Negron followed with a walk. Izturis singled to tie the game. Emmanuel Burris lined to secondbaseman Scooter Gennett, who made a spectacular diving catch. Corky Miller hit a high chop to the first base side of the pitcher's mound. Hellweg had no chance to prevent Hessman from scoring the winning run.
