Drew Stubbs Named by Scouts as A Top Centerfielder
Drew Stubbs has struggled at the plate. As the strikeout mount, fans have screamed that Stubbs be removed from the lineup. Stubbs continues to play because on a team built on pitching and defense the up the middle defense is critical.
The Reds have one of the best defense catchers this side of Yadier Molina in Ryan Hanigan. Brandon Phillips has earned Gold Glove awards. Zack Cozart has been steady all season, showing an increase in range from last season, in which he was hampered by ankle problems. He had problems with his ankle before a dislocated left elbow forced him to shut it down last season. His ankle was operated on since he was already out of action.
Stubbs is the key to the outfield.
There are four scouts that follow the Reds regularly.
They were asked Tuesday to name the top three fielding centerfielders in the NL since that is the area of coverage for these baseball professional.
A scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers named, in no particular order, Andrew McCutcheon, Drew Stubbs and Matt Kemp.
"The Reds pitcher should buy Stubbs a steak dinner. I've seen him save runs for every one of them," one scout said. "No one talks about his arm. We tell our guys not to run on him."
A scout from Arizona picked Stubbs and McCutcheon and couldn't immediately come up with a third.
One scout, a former general manager, picked Stubbs, Chris Young and McCutcheon.
