Reds Intrasquad Game Begins in Controversy

The morning chill in the air mass hovering around Goodyear, Arizona permeated the Reds two-inning intrasquad game.

Coach Mark Berry posted the rosters for the White vs Gray scrimmage but was embroiled in a controversy.

After a couple loud heated words, Berry, polled the sports writers waiting to interview the players.

"How do you spell the color gray/" Berry queried.  All three writers responded G R A Y.  "That's three out of three," Berry told clubhouse manager, Ric Stowe.  Stowe showed Berry an invoice in which the manufacturer spelled it G R E Y.  "Every year someone questions me on how to spell the color," Berry said as he posted the rosters.

It was the first time that Reds players had game conditions to work out the kinks, leading up to Saturday's Cactus League opener against the Cleveland Indians.

Moeller grad Mark Brackman faced three hitters.  He walked Drew Stubbs but struck out Zack Cozart.  Neftali Soto hit into a 5-4-3 double play.

Todd Frazier hit an opposite field home run off LHP Donnie Joseph to lead off the second inning for the White team.

Denis Phipps singled off Nick Christiani but was erased on a caught stealing by Brian Esposito on a controversial call by base umpire, Bill Doran.
