The brief audition for Zack Cozart has come to a premature end. He will have surgery on Friday to fix his hyperextended left elbow.
Cozart left the July 23 game with Atlanta when Nate McClouth ran into his extended left arm.
He expected to miss two weeks. He was trying baseball activities wearing a brace but it was uncomfortable.
The Reds have fallen out of the race for the Central Division title since then. The team and Cozart would like to be ready for spring training.
"We tried a brace but it wasn't working out," Cozart said. "We decided to shut it down and get it fixed. There are only six or seven weeks to the end of the season. I couldn't see myself getting back in time to help out."
He is looking forward to spring training in Goodyear, Arizona.
"I would be 100 percent for spring. By then it would have been so long since I've played that I will be excited to be playing. I will be able to do baseball stuff by December because its my non-throwing arm."
