Dateline: Cincinnati

Among two teams who have been horrible with runners in scoring position. The Arizona Diamondbacks found away around it. Three solo home runs and three one with a man on first bit the Reds in a 5-3 verdict.

The road win allowed the Diamondbacks to win two of three in this run starved series.

Arizona won Friday night 5-2 with three unearned runs in the ninth. The Reds won 2-1 on Saturday on an eighth inning home run by Noelvi Marte.

On Sunday the Diamondbacks did get a hit with a runner in scoring position in the ninth inning.

The Reds scored a total of seven runs in the series and Marte accounted for three of those with a solo home run in each game.

In the series the Reds were 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Arizona was 3-for-24.

The Reds got started in the first inning. JJ Bleday took Diamondbacks’ starter Zac Gallen out to the right field bleachers for his 12th home run of the season.

The Reds had a shot at Gallen in the second inning. Matt McLain and Jose Trevino, fresh off the IL, singled with one out. Edwin Arroyo hit a sinking line drive to left field that looked like it would fall in but Tommy Troy made a diving catch and Blake Dunn struck out

Troy led off the third inning against Andrew Abbott, hitting his second home run of his very short career.

The Reds had a shot at Gallen in the third to put numbers up. Bleday was hit by a pitch to open it. Sal Stewart hit into a double play. Nathaniel Lowe singled. He scored on Eugenio Suarez’ double off the wall in right center. Marte grounded out.

Abbott pitch count mounted he walked three and went to three ball counts on four other batters. Terry Francona sent out Tejay Antone for the sixth after Abbott threw 95 pitches with 54 of them balls. His line was five innings, on four hits, three walks and five strikeouts. His ERA dropped to 3.95.

Antone was derailed by a rare error at first base by Lowe off Ildemaro Varga’s bat. Geraldo Perdome hit his fourth home run to the seats in right.

Lowe started the sixth with a walk but Suarez hit into a double play. Noelvi Marte tied it again with a two-out home run off Gallen. His third of the season and series.

Arroyo reached base on pitcher Juan Morillo’s error but Dunn grounded to a third double play turned by Arizona.

Gabriel Moreno hit a 3-1 offering off Zach Maxwell into the first row of the right field stands for his sixth home run.

The Reds tested Kevin Ginkel in the bottom of the inning. Sal Stewart singled with one out. Lowe singled. Ginkel threw a wild pitch to put both in scoring position. Suarez and Marte struck out swinging.

Rain forced a hour and 12 minute delay.

Chris Paddack picked up in the ninth. He walked LuJames Groover. Jorge Barrosa sacrificed Groover to second. Ketel Marte singled for the only hit with runners in scoring position in the game.

Paul Sewald walked McLain right away. He struck out Will Benson, retired Arroyo on a pop to short and Dunn on a line out to center to pick up his 17th save.

The Diamondbacks went over .500 at 36-35. The Reds dropped a season-low four games under .500 at 33-37.
