Chase Burns checked the New York Yankees and Tyler Stohenson made a statement to New York Yankees to take the final two games of the series with a 4-1 triumph.
Burns improved to 9-1 with an ERA at an even 2.00. He worked five innings, allowing Ben Rice’s 22nd home run of the season and no other runs.
Tyler Stephenson took Yankees’ starter Elmer Rodriguez, who was called up today, deep with his sixth home run.
The home run followed a two out single by Noelvi Marte that moved Nathaniel Lowe who walked up a base. Stephenson belted a 3-1 pitch from Rodriguez into the Reds’ bullpen in left center.
It gave Reds pitchers all the runs they needed.
Burns pitched five innings and gave up five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. He has given up two or fewer runs in 14 of his 15 starts.
Burns walked Volpe in the third but picked him off right before Rice’s home run.
The Yankees were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position against Burns. He leads baseball with an .082 average against in RISP situations.
Sam Moll and Caleb Ferguson shut down the Yanks in the sixth and seventh.
Terry Francona went to Tony Santillan in the eighth, who took just 16 pitches to finish off the Bronx Bombers over two innings.
“Someone had to go two,” Terry Francona said. “He did a good job.”
It was the first two inning save of Santillan’s career and fifth save of the season.
Santillan did not allow a run in his first 11 appearances and then slumped. In 15 appearances between April 24 and June third, Santillan pitched in 15 games allowing 17 runs in 12 1/3 innings and nine home runs.
“He is such a competitor. I remember a Saturday night game. He gave up two home runs and weren’t going to pitch him. He insisted on throwing a side the next day. He has a big heart,” Francona said.
The Reds added a run against Camilo Dotel. Spencer Steer grounded a hit up the middle and kept running as Jose Caballero was too slow to the ball. The center fielder’s throw got away and Steer took third as the Bronx cheer filled the Stadium. Marte hit a ground rule double to score Steer.
The Reds won their second straight series after taking 2-of-3 from the Mets. The Reds took all three series from New York teams.
The Reds are 14-12 all time at Yankee Stadium. They are the only visiting team with a winning record in the Bronx.
