Reserves PJ Higgins and Blake Dunn join Sal Stewart to support Andrew Abbott in taking the series from the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-4.
Dunn tripled and doubled, scoring two runs. Backup catcher, filling the role with a hamstring injury to Jose Trevino, drove in two runs with singles. Stewart had four hits, including his team leading 12th home run to hilight the Reds 15-hit attack,
Abbott took awhile to find the plate in the first inning.
He walked Trea Turnerto open the inning. Turner stole second and went to third on PJ Higgins throwing error. Adolis Garcia walked. Brice Harper flied to left. Turner just beat the throw from JJ Bleday.
The Reds got to Aaron Nola in the second inning. Sal Stewart doubled into the right field corner. Spencer Steer hit a cue shot off the handle of the bat for a single. Stewart had to hold third. Nathaniel Lowe shot a double past Alec Bohm at first for a double. Will Benson’s ground ball scored Steer. Higgins singled Lowe home.
Blake Dunn started the fourth with a triple. Higgins second single put the Reds up 4-1.
Dunn doubled to left center off reliever Tim Mayza in the sixth and trotted home when pinch hitter Dane Myers doubled into the right field corner.
Abbott started the sixth inning with 92 pitches. Bohm led off with his fifth home run. Brock Burke came in from the bullpen.
Abbott pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned on three hits and three walks. He struck out three. He dropped his ERA to 3.97.
With two outs Brandon Marsh singled. Edmundo Sosa followed with his second home run of the season to make it a one-run game.
The Reds got two back in the seventh. Bleday singled against Mayza. Phillies manager Don Mattingly brought in Orion Kerkering, Stewart singled for his third hit of the game Lowe hit a long two-run double.
Connor Phillips started the seventh for Cincinnati. Phillips and Burke are tied for the league’s lead in appearances at 24. He pitched a 1-2-3 seventh.
Graham Ashcraft, who gave up a game winning home run to Stott on Monday, started the eighth for the Reds. He struck out two to send the game to the ninth inning.
Stewart followed Bleday’s second hit with a long home run off Jose Alvarado. Stewart took over the team leading with 34 RBI from Elly De La Cruz. He is tied with four others for eighth place on the Major League list.
