Improved Andrew Abbott Charged With Winning Series

 Andrew Abbott has turned around a tough start to the season. He will take the mound to face the Philadelphia Phillies in the deciding game of the series.

The Reds all-star lefthander was 0-2 with a 6.59 ERA in his first six starts but he enters the game with the Phillies with a 3-2 record and a 4.21 ERA. His last start against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday, Abbott pitched five innings and allowed one run on four hits. He had a string of 21 2/3 scoreless innings when Rhys Hoskins hit a home run in the sixth inning.

Abbott is 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA lifetime against the Phillies in four starts. His last meeting with them was August 11, last season. He pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, no walks and six strikeouts. He entered the eighth with a 1-0 lead and struck out the first two batters. Edmundo Sosa singled. Weston Wilson doubled. Trea Turner singled. Tony Santillan relieved and gave up a home run to Kyle Schwarber, who has missed the first two games of the series with an illness.

Aaron Nola will try to put the series in the Phillies favor.

Nola, in his 12th season, enters the game with a 2-3 record and 5.91 ERA. He has struggled in his last two games, allowing nine runs in his last 8 1/3 innings, including six in his last start. He pitched just 3 2/3 innings. He surrendered six hits, including two home runs and three walks to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

His career includes 10 starts against the Reds. He has a 5-2 record and 3.57 ERA against Cincinnati. His last start was on April 16, 2023. He beat the Reds in a 14-3 game, pitching five innings, giving up three runs, two earned in five innings on five hits and three walks.

Kyle Schwarber from Middletown, Ohio will miss his third game with illness.
