Dateline: Cincinnati
The Reds need Andrew Abbott to return to All-Star form.
The four game losing streak has put the Reds three games behind the National League Central leaders. The Cubs are on a six-game winning streak.
Abbott is 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA and opponents have amassed a .303 batting average. The struggles Abbott had in the five starts following the opening day gem he pitched, appear to be over based on the quality start he turned in the last time out against the Colorado Rockies. He pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. He pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning.
He owns a 3-1 record in seven career starts against the Cubs with a 2.80 ERA and a .234 batting average. Dansby Swanson is the exception for Cubs hitters, facing Abbott. Swanson has five hits in 14 at bats, including two doubles and two home runs.
Jameson Taillon will try to extend the Cubs winning streak. The 34-year old right hander from Woodlands, Texas is 2-1 with a 4.41 ERA in six starts.
Taillon has two quality starts, including his last start in which he pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk. He struck out six San Diego Padres hitters but gave up two home runs.
Taillon has 20 career starts against the Reds in his 10-year career. He is 7-7 with a 4.46 ERA. The Reds own a .267 batting average, and allowed 17 home runs in his 20 starts.
