Homer Bailey Gets No Run Support

http://donatelifeohio.org/

The Reds fell 1-0 for the second time in five games as Matt Garza shutout the Reds on two hits.

The Reds with Mat Latos on the mound lost 1-0 to San Diego on Monday and were also blanked 3-0 by the Padres on Wendsday.

It was Garza's first complete game shutout since his no-hitter on July 26, 2010 when he was with Tampa Bay against Detroit.

Homer Bailey was the hard-luck loser. He pitched eight innings and allowed the only run on seven hits but two of those hits surrounded a walk in the first inning after he struck out the first two batters of the game.

Jonathan Lucroy doubled with two outs.  Bailey walked Chris Gomez after the Brewers' centerfielder fouled off two full count pitches.  Aramis Ramirez singled between third and short for the game winner.

It was the fifth 1-0 loss for the Reds this season.

"I hope we're not talking about those at the end of the season," Bryan Price said.  "Maybe if we're talking about how we overcame them."

The Reds defense cut two Milwaukee runs out at the plate.  In the sixth Kris Davis doubled off the wall in right with Ramirez on first with two outs.  Bruce chased the ball down and threw toward relay man Brandon Phillips.  The throw was over Phillips head but Zack Cozart raced over to catch the ball and make an off balance throw that beat Ramirez easily.

The next inning there was the same scenario.  Mark Reynolds was on first with two outs.  Scooter Gennett doubled down the line. Bruce cut it off, then made a strong throw to Phillips, who wheeled and made a strong throw to Devin Mesoraco for the third out.

The Reds had nothing going on offense. Garza retired the first 12 Reds' batters.

Phillips singled sharply to right center.  Jay Bruce, who began the game in an 0-for-20 slump, ripped the ball down the line but Reynolds was there to glove it.  The ball was hit so hard that it tore Reynolds glove but it was little consolation to Bruce, who is now hitless in his last 23 plate appearances. It is the longest slump of his career.

'It's frustrating but you have to divorce results from the process," Bruce said.  "I have confidence that I will be back to hitting again. You can't let it affect the next at bat."

Bailey has the same philosophy.

"That was a good hitting team that got great pitching," Bailey said.  'I can not say enough about our defense.  The offense has picked me up before too.  It is frustrating of course but it's the way baseball goes sometimes."

Price has seen Garza many times in the past.

"Garza was the story," Price said.  "That is the best he's ever thrown when I've seen him."
