Marietta College Wins Its Fifth DIII NCAA Baseball Championship

The Marietta College Pioneers captured the NCAA Division III National Baseball Championship with an 18-5 win over Chapman College on Tuesday in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Austin Blaski pitched six innings and allowed just one run.  Aaron Hopper had four hits and four RBI.

Marrieta is the winningest college program in America and owns a record five DIII National Championships.

Its other crowns were won in 1981, 1983, 1986 and 2006.

Colorado Rockies manager, Jim Tracy, was a member of Marietta's Baseball team in the mid-70's.

Other Marietta alumns to play in the major leagues are, Frank Barron of the Washington Senators in 1914, Matt DeSalvo for Atlanta in 2008, Ted Lewis of the Boston National League team and the Boston American League team from 1896-1901. Terry Mulholland, who pitched 20 years for the Phillies, Cubs,Mariners, Indians, Twins, Giants and Braves from 1986-2006.  Mullholand pitched a no-hitter for Philadelphia against the San Francisco Giants on August 15, 1990, Kent Tekulve, who pitched in relief for the Pirates, Phillies, and Reds for 16 seasons.  He finished the game for the Pirates that clinched the 1979 World Series over Baltimore. Duane Theiss, who pitched for Atlanta in 1977 and 1978.

Jason Ungerbuehler
Jason Ungerbuehler, who graduated from Roger Bacon High School, is a freshman catcher/outfielder for Marietta.  He played in 18 games, hitting .285 with three RBI.
