Cordero had a good five-game run ended when Carlos Pena hit a home run to tie Saturday's game at two to open the bottom of the ninth.
Cordero hasn't had a lot of save chances. The Reds, when they win, tend to win big. He pitched in two games this week with the game tied because of his light workload compared to the rest of the bullpen.
Bronson Arroyo turned over a one-run lead to Logan Ondrusek one out into the eighth inning.
Timely hitting by Ryan Hanigan and Drew Stubbs gave the Reds a 2-1 lead after Blake Dewitt homered off Arroyo in the fourth inning. Earlier the Reds missed a chance to score first when Jay Bruce bounced out with the bases loaded. Bruce entered the game tied for the team lead with 18 RBI with Joey Votto.
Cordero couldn't hold the slim lead.
One out after the home run Blake Dewitt singled to center with the Reds outfield play "no doubles" . The outfielders play a little deeper in that situation. The gamble is that a ball they would normally catch falls for a single but a ball that would be hit over their heads for extra bases would be caught. This causes the opponents offense to need three hits to score.
Dewitt's single fell in front of Stubbs. Jeff Baker pinch hit. Baker hit a home run to beat Arthur Rhodes last April at Great American Ball Park. For a long while that was the only run Rhodes allowed. Baker hit a fly to deep center but Stubbs was turned around and it appeared the wind blew the fly out of his grasp with two outs. Dewitt rounded third and appeared to score but the Reds caught a break when the ball bounced into the bleachers for a ground rule double, sending Dewitt back to third.
The reprieve was temporary as Kosuke Fukadome singled through the middle to snap Cordero's personal streak the Reds three-game winning streak.
Johnny Cueto makes his first start of the season on Mother's Day.
