Bats Boost Reds Over .500 In 10-4 Win Over Houston

The Leagues best offense came alive this afternoon against Brett Myers and the Houston Astros.

The day after dragging into the ninth inning with one hit, Cincinnati banged out 14, including home runs by Freddie Lewis and Jay Bruce.

Bruce, who ended the Wednesday game with an RBI double, had three hits and scored three times.  Ryan Hanigan had three hits and drove in three runs.

"It looks like Jay is getting hot and Ryan has been struggling a little bit, now he's coming around," Dusty Baker said.  "We'd like to get all these guys going.  It was big for Fred Lewis to hit a home run in that role.  That's what he's going to be doing most of the time."

Hanigan came into the game hitting .211 but added 35 points to his average.

"I've been making adjustments," Hanigan said.  "My swing still isn't where I'd like it to be."

Homer Bailey pitched six strong innings in his first start of 2011, allowing one run on four hits and a walk.  He struck out seven.

"That was outstanding from the beginning," Baker said.  "Homer was sharp, real sharp.  I wish he could have gone farther but he threw as many pitches as he had all year to this point.  We are hoping the layoff for him and Cueto keeps them going through September."

Bailey was happy to be back against big league competition rather than at Dayton tonight as it was planned before the rain canceled this game on Monday night.

Homer Bailey
"To be at this level of competition, felt good," Bailey said.  "I had a lot of confidence. I tried to keep the same mentality I had in the bullpen, just throw to the glove.  Hanigan had a hell of a game."

"Homer doesn't fall into any type of a pattern.  The way to do that is to throw all of your pitches for strikes," Hanigan said.  "He throw four plus pitches and he threw them all today.  The slider especially has come along for him. It's an important pitch and keeps hitters off his fastball.  He has shown dominance like that before.  Now if he can do that consistently....."

Joey Votto singled in the fourth.  He has reached base in all 31 games this season.
