Chase Burns was better in his second outing against San Diego on Thursday.
He pitched into the third inning with 2 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits, including a home run by Rodolfo Duran.
"I was using the slider," Burns said. "I know I have good stuff. I just need to control it. I was pulling my fastball a little bit but it was better than last time. Guys are good up here (major leagues). They are not going to swing at bad fastballs."
It is still spring training and Burns was missing again with his fastball.
"He has great stuff and that's going to change. I don't care how old you are it's still spring training but the ball is coming out good," Terry Francona said.

Chase Petty got his work for two innings, allowing a walk and striking out one.
Graham Ashcraft took over on the mound in the sixth inning.
He gave up hits to Sung-Mun Song and Clay Dugan with a walk to Samad Taylor. Duran reached on what could have been a double play but non roster third baseman, Cam Collier cut off the ball in front of Edwin Arroyo and couldn't get the force after a diving stop. Carlos Rodriguez walked and Machado hit his second home run, a grand slam to tie the game.
Ashcraft pitched 2/3 an inning, allowing six runs on four hits and two walks.
Elly De La Cruz hit a two-out triple in the first inning to the gap in left center against Nick Pivetta. The Reds scored three runs off Pivetta in the second inning.
Spencer Steer walked. Will Benson singled and Dane Myers walked. Will Banfield cleared the bases with a double into the left field corner.
De La Cruz lined a two-run double to the left centerfield gap after Friedl and McLain singled off
Miguel Mendez.
Eugenio Suarez, Spencer Steer and Will Benson walked and scored when Noelvi Marte drilled a 3-2 double to left against Justin Yeager.
Dane Myers doubled Marte home with a double to send the Reds to a 9-3 lead after five innings.
Tyler Callihan homered off Manuel Castro to put the Reds up in the sixth inning.
"We were happy for him. He's been pressing a little bit," Francona said. "It is easy for us to say, it's only five or six at bats. He's been playing late in games, trying to make an impression.'
The Padres scored a run off Zach Maxwell with two outs.
