The Reds selected the contract of LHP Joe La Sorsa and immediately optioned him to Triple A Louisville where he has been pitching.
The Reds signed the 27-year old St. John’s University graduated on February 4th after the Washington Nationals released him. He has a clause in his contract if the Reds didn’t place him on at least the 40-man roster.
A roster spot was opened after the Reds traded Alexis Diaz to the Dodgers.
La Sorsa pitched in 21 games in relief as of June 2. He was 2-1 with a 3.92 ERA. He pitched 20 ⅔ innings with 14 walks for a 1.306 WHIP and 14 strikeouts.
La Sorsa was drafted in the 18th round by the Tampa Rays in 2019. He pitched in two games for the Rays in 2023. He pitched two hitless innings in his first game against the Chicago Cubs on May 29. The Nationals claimed him off waivers on June 8, 2023. The Mt. Kisco, a New York native pitched for Washington in 2023 and 2024.
He is 1-0 with a 4.47 ERA in 41 big league games. La Sorsa has 50 ⅓ innings in the majors, allowing 49 hits, walking 14 with 42 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.252.
La Sorsa had a good spring with the Reds in Goodyear, Arizona. He allowed one run on five hits in seven innings, a 1.29 ERA.
He was competing for a roster spot with Sam Moll, Brent Suter, Taylor Rogers and Alex Young, who is out for the season. Moll is in Louisville.
Wade Miley is close to being ready for the big leagues and can either be used as a starter or in long relief.
