Hunter Greene Heads The Starting Rotation With The Opening Day Start. One Spot Left To Feel

Dateline: 318 kilometers from the Gulf of Mexico

On March 7, Reds’ manager Terry Francona, named Hunter Greene, will be the opening day starter against the San Francisco Giants on March 27.

The Reds decided before Greene’s four-inning gem against the Texas Rangers on March 5 but Francona wanted to talk with the other guys to explain the decision.

Nick Lodolo is slated to pitch the second game on March 29. Nick Martinez will get the ball on March 30.

Brady Singer will start against the Texas Rangers on March 31.

The fifth starter is TBA.

Graham Ashcraft and Carson Spiers have been getting regular starts. Rhett Lowder and Andrew Abbott are getting closer to game action as they work through injuries. Chase Petty may be the wild card and win a spot especially if you factor in his three inning stint against the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers on March 4. He pitched three innings and allowed a home run to Mookie Betts but little else.

“It’s a huge honor. I was able to do it in 2023. It’s very special, especially in Cincinnati. It feels like a holiday,” Greene said. “There is so much rich history to opening day in Cincinnati. I just want to provide a high level of entertainment to the fans and also be able to get away with a win to set the tone and start the year off right.”

Greene sees it as a continuation of the progress that he’s made in his career after three full seasons, albeit with injuries here and there.

“My mindset coming in was not just to be the opening day starter,” Greene said. “I wanted to be in a good place, to prove to myself, the team, Terry (Francona) and the decision makers that I’d be the right choice.”

“The goal is to be better every year,” Greene said. “You can’t necessarily control that but I feel I’ve made some good strides and progress in doing that. The rest of spring I will continue to work on making my pitches sharper and sharper. Health is a concern and I feel great. I’ve been able to shift my mindset on other parts of the game because I feel healthy.”
