TCU Horned Frogs Sting Bearcats Ending A Once Promising Season


The University of Cincinnati Bearcats hosted the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs on a frigid Nippert Stadium for a night game dubbed Nip at Night.

The Bearcats (5-7, 3-6 Big 12) needed a win to be eligible for a post season bowl game but dropped their fifth straight game 20-13. 

Considering Cincinnati defeated two opponents during the season that beat TCU. The Bearcats posted wins over Houston and Central Florida while the Horned Frogs fell to both of them.

TCU started the scoring on a two-yard run by Savion Williams with 11:18 left in the first quarter. the scoring with a two-yard run.

The Bearcats' defense turned in a three and out on TCU's first possession but ran into the kicker and lost the ball when Jamoi Mayes muffed the punt.

Cincinnati pushed the Horned Frogs to another third down but Josh Hoover found Jake Bech, the TCU leading receiver for a 19-yard gain on third and four to keep the drive going.

Kyle Lemmerman kicked a 27-yard field goal for TCU 13 seconds into the second quarter.

Corey Kiner broke away for a 46-yard gain to put the ball on the one and finished the drive with a plunge to put the Beacats on the scoreboard and back in the game at 10-7.

The Horned Frogs (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) took seven plays to navigate a 65-yard drive to erase Cincinnati's touchdown for a 17-7 lead. Williams rushed for his second score of the game from two yards out.

Kiner lost a fumble at Cincinnati's 34 but the defense stiffened to force a Lemmerman 35-yard field goal with 3:44 left in the first half for a 20-7 TCU lead.

Lemmerman missed a 38-yard field goal on the last play of the half to keep the margin at 13 points.

Joe Royer, an Elder High School grad, set a new Bearcat record for single season catches by a tight end when he caught his 46th pass in the third quarter. Kansas City Chiefs all-pro Travis Kelce set the record at 45 in 2012.

Cincinnati drove to the TCU 12 but Brendan Sorsby threw an interception to Channing Conado in the end zone, trying to connect with Tony Johnson with 11:34 left in the game.

The Bearcats closed the gap with 5:15 remaining on a drive that started on their own six. Sorsby ran for 42 yards including the final eight yards to put close the gap to 20-13. Nathan Hawks missed the extra point but TCU was offside. Hawks missed again UC has already used two time outs in the half.

 TCU got the ball on its 31-yard line with 5:10 to play.

Cincinnati got the ball back, out of timeouts, on its own three-yard line but could only reach the TCU 39 before running out of time.
