Reds' ace Luis Castillo is going to make his first start of the season against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, perhaps wishing it was Sunday as the Reds have a winning 3-2 record on that day of the week.
Castillo was late to a shortened spring training then had soreness in his shoulder. The Reds put him on a throwing program and he completed three minor league rehab starts. He is ready to go after logging 10 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run.
The Reds designated Phil Diehl for assignment. Diehl, the lone lefthander in the bullpen, is a graduate of Moeller High School.
"It is nice to have a lefty in the bullpen," David Bell said. "Since a reliever has to face three batters now, there aren't any teams that have a left handed specialist anymore. I would not consider Philip one of them any way."
"Pitchers have to get batters out from both sides of the plate," Bell continued. "We have guys that do good against lefthanders. Tony (Santillan), Sims, Diaz, Moreta. That's good for us now."
Lefthanded starter Mike Minor has rehab starts scheduled on Tuesday and Sunday at Louisville. Both games are home.
Jake Fraley's knee is getting better. They don't know what is wrong.
"They would give him an MRI but it is getting better," Bell said.
