Robert Stephenson Wild In Reds Loss To Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks took advantage of Robert Stephenson's lack of command to score four runs, leading to a 7 -3 win over the Reds.

Stephenson walked two but was behind in the count seemingly his entire outing, his fourth.

David Peralta doubled down the line on a 3-2 pitch to open the game.  After Stephenson struck out A.J. Pollack and Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb walked and Steven Souza singled to score Peralta.

Peralta hit a two-run double in the second.  Ketel Marte singled but Tucker Barnhart threw him out trying to steal.  Jeff Mathis walked and Ildemaro Vargas singled.  Peralta's liner over Scott Schebler's head in right scored them.  Peralta took third on a wild pitch and scored when Goldschmidt grounded to Suarez at third base.

Stephenson gave up four earned runs on five hits and two walks over two innings.  He pitched behind in the count and his fastball was hit hard as a result.  The last time out on March 8 against Colorado, Stephenson had his best outing, three innings of scoreless, one-hit baseball.

"He had a lot of deep counts," Bryan Price said.  "The first five guys got to a three-ball count. He didn't have that fall back pitch to get back in the count.  His fastball was hit pretty hard when he was behind in the count.  I was hoping he'd feed off the last game here against the Rockies.  The outs didn't come as easy.  He wasn't sharp."

Schebler cut the lead in half with a two-run home run off Jorge De La Rosa.  Tucker Barnhart added his fourth home run off Yoshihisa Hirano.

"Tucker has become much more of a two-way player," Price said.  "I think we saw that last year.  He's become a nice offensive player.  There will be times, he's hitting eighth and doing a great job. It's a hard place to hit.  There will be other times where he'll work himself a little higher up in the order. I have a lot of faith in his at bats."

The Diamondbacks added to their lead with runs off Tanner Rainey, Kevin Quackenbush and Jimmy Herget.  It was the first run that Rainey has allowed in four innings.  For Quackenbush, the run was unearned, leaving his ERA at 0.00 for five innings.  Herget gave up three unearned runs in three innings coming into the game.

Veteran Vance Worley had allowed seven earned runs over 4 1/3 innings in his first three games.  Worley pitched two innings on Wednesday, his second scoreless outing in a row.

Offensively, Jesse Winker had two hits, one off Zack Greinke before the pitcher left with tightness in his groin.  Mason Williams, Rosell Herrera, Jose Peraza and Stuart Turner had hits for the Reds.

Luis Castillo flew to New York to be with his wife Delores, who is in labor with the couples first child.
