Eugenio Suarez Powers Reds Past Texas

Eugenio hit two home run, including a two-run job in the first against Texas Rangers' starter Matt Bush and Tucker Barnhart hit a two-run home run to lead the Reds to a 6-3 win.

Suarez led off the third with a home run off Yohander Mendez.

Anthony DeSclafani was in trouble in the first inning.  Delino DeSheilds Jr. hit an infield single. Sin Soo Cho walked but Jurickson Profar hit into a double play.

"I was able to get in a groove," DeSclafani said.  "I had some quick inning after that double play.  I thought it was going to be a long inning until then. That was perfect timing. I was glad I could get clean innings after that."

DeSclafani missed the 2017 season with a sore elbow.  Now he is on track with two good outings of his three starts.  His velocity was 88-90.

"I'm throwing strikes and just going through the process," DeSclafani said.  "Honestly, it doesn't matter I just wanted to get outs."

Jose Peraza hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the third after Suarez home run.  Barnhart followed a walk to Scott Schebler with his third home run of the spring off Jose Leclerc, matching Suarez spring training total.

Tyler Mahle, competing for the starting rotation allowed a run on one hit in three innings.  Cody Reed pitched a scoreless inning, then turned the 6-1 lead over to Oliver Perez, who hit Drew Robinson with a pitch before giving up a two-run home run to Luis Marte.

After giving up four runs in his first outing, Reed has allowed just one run over his last 4 1/3 innings, three appearances.

Austin Brice recorded the last four outs for the save.

Bryan Price had praise for all his pitchers.

"DeSclafani he struggled a little bit with the first couple of hitters then he locked it in," Price said.  "His command was good. He threw some really good curve balls. His fastball command got better as the game went on.  Mahle came in and was equally good. He has a much improved slider and change up.  Pitching was outstanding tonight."

"We love to see performance.  The other part of the evaluation is health and over all pitch quality," Price said.  "Anything can happen out here.  We played a relatively efficient game against a nice ballclub, it was a good thing to see.  The result is great.  It's good to see six combined innings with  one run but been haphazard, pitch from behind and make mistakes that they didn't pay for.  Today they were really good."
