The Reds’ starting pitching rotation hasn’t come out of the gate healthy since 2012 when all five starters made all their scheduled starts.
Since then Bryan Price set an All-Time record for using rookie starting pitchers. Nine rookies started for the Reds this season, six for the first time ever.

The Reds team ERA is at 5.26. If that holds up it will exceed the franchise record of 5.19.
Once the Louisville season ended, the Reds recalled Cody Reed, Amir Garrett, Rookie Davis and Jackson Stephens all of whom made at least one start this season.
The current Reds’ starting rotation is Homer Bailey, who returned June 24, Sal Romano, Robert Stephenson, Luis Castillo and Tyler Mahle. Castillo is making his last start Wednesday against the Brewers. He will have exceeded his incremental innings increase from last season. Tyler Mahle will exceed his in a couple starts. Sal Romano will get an extra day to heal a cut finger. He could pitch but the Reds want to work in the other youngsters.
“We have a general idea of how to use everyone down the stretch but it is fluid,” Bryan Price said. “Garrett will probably get a start against the Mets (series starting Thursday). We will just reshuffle the deck. We’d like to see Reed primarily out of the bullpen. The probability is that three of the four will be in the rotation. It is a great opportunity for them to finish strong.”
The Reds with Bailey and four rookies have shown signs of vast improvement.
Reds’ starters have a 2.94 ERA in the last 11 games with seven quality starts.
The Reds would like to have an idea which starters to pencil in during spring training.
Castillo and Mahle’s exit will give 10 starts to other young arms in the last 24 games.
Next spring the Reds will likely start with Finnegan, Bailey, DeSclafani and Castillo, leaving one starting job unclaimed.
