Johnny Cueto Stops Indians - Ramon Santiago Gives Code Red

http://donatelifeohio.org/

Ramon Santiago hadn't homered in nearly a year.

He must have thought it was about time.  Santiago performed a 'Code Red" on the Cleveland Indians starter Josh Tomlin, who was called up from Columbus to make the start, by hitting a three-run home run.

The blow gave Johnny Beisboll all the runs he needed in the Reds 9-2 win.  Cueto tossed his fourth complete game.

The Reds scored first on a welcoming gift from its northern neighbors.  Tomlin hit Todd Frazier with a pitch with two outs.  Ryan Ludwick doubled into the leftfield corner that Mike Aviles played perfectly off the wall but Lonnie Chisenhall muffed the throw which scooted away far enough to let Frazier score.

Cueto wasn't sharp early.

Aviles doubled and scored on Michael Brantley's sharp single to right.  Jay Bruce threw home but Frazier cut it and threw Brantley out at second.

Santiago hit his first home run since August 13 of last season and his first on the road since he homered at Great American Ball Park as a member of the Tigers in 2012 in the second inning.  The homer followed Brayan Pena, who reached base after he struck out on a wild pitch, and Kristopher Negron's single.

Zack Cozart led off the fourth with a triple.  The Indians played the infield in.  Jason Kipnis robbed Santiago of his fourth RBI with a diving stop of a hard ground ball.  Cozart was not running on contact.  Billy Hamilton struck out.  Bruce, who singled hard through the shift in the second inning, beat the shift again as he topped a ball weakly toward second.  Kipnis was pulled and 10 yards into shallow right.

The Reds' running game earned them the sixth run.   Chris Heisey singled and advanced to third on Pena's single that extended his hitting streak to 10 games.  Pena took off for second on a pitch to Negron.  Indians catcher Yan Gomes threw to second as Heisey raced home.  Heisey did not get a steal of home because an out was recorded on the play.

Cueto tied up the Indians over the next five innings, allowing just two base runners.

The Indians scored on a weird play in the eighth.

Lonnie Chisenhall walked.  David Murphy's single put runners on first and third with no outs.  Gomes doubled high off the wall in right but as the ball was fielded by Bruce, a ball flew out of the Reds' bullpen and rolled toward second base.  Murphy thought the live ball eluded Negron, the cutoff man but Cozart threw him out at third.  Cueto retired the last two batters in the inning.

Bruce hit his 11th home run of the season off Carlos Carrasco.  It was his first home run since July 8 against the Cubs.  Bruce had three hits in the game and had five hits in the two day stay in Cleveland.

The Reds added two more in the inning when Negron hit a ball in the gap in right with the bases loaded.  Two runs scored but Pena was thrown out at the plate.
