Bryan Price Learns A Trick From Dusty Baker

It was one of those games you never forget.  One that turns from a sure win into a devastating loss.

Bryan Price, the first year manager, got a victory over Seattle on Friday but it didn't "taste good."

Chris Heisey hit his second two-run home run of the game to cap a four-run fifth inning.  Heisey's second home run along with a long home run by Brandon Phillips put the Reds up 8-0.

The Reds have had several leads in the last week evaporate in the dry Arizona heat.  This one would too.  The newest Red, Brett Marshall completed three scoreless innings, then turned the ball over to Ismael Guillon, a 22-year old prospect. A couple walks lead to three runs for the Mariners.

Daniel Corcino started the sixth but couldn't finish it.

Corcino got the first two batters, then gave up a home run to D.J. Peterson.  It began to unravel on Corcino; two walk, a double, a triple, another walk.

"The concern with Corcino is he is not commanding the ball in the games like he did in his bullpens or live batting practices," Price said.  "We were confident he would have a good spring and he hasn't.  His is one of the most confident and best looking prospects that we have and the stuff is still there. We just have to get him over the hump."

Price had to go get him and bring in young Michael Lorezen, who gave up a double before getting out of the inning with the score tied.

The Reds scored two in the eighth but the Mariners came back with one.

It reminded Price of a game in 2010.

It was May 20. The Reds entered the ninth inning with a 9-3 lead.  They were packed and ready to catch a plane for Cleveland but the Braves had other ideas.  Three runs in and and the bases loaded in the ninth.  The Reds had to go to its closer Francisco Cordero.

Brooks Conrad hit a walk-off grand slam that nicked the glove of Laynce Nix in left to give the Reds a devastating loss.  (See the video from MLB ( http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/y2010/index.jsp?gid=2010_05_20_cinmlb_atlmlb_1&mode=video )

"The best thing that happened was that Dusty had a mandatory meeting in the lobby bar when we got to Cleveland," Price said.  "Everybody, coaches, players had to get a drink and say this one's over. We get back to work tomorrow and we beat Cleveland the next day. It got the bad taste out of our
mouths."

The Reds were a half game out of first at the time and went on to win the Central Division.

"You don't want to get used to those type of game but they are going to happen," Price said. "You have to be resilient enough to get past them.  They are going to happen.  Anybody that has been in the game long enough knows they will but you can't let them stay with you.  It was a great idea. Dusty reminded us it was one loss. Let's go back back out there tomorrow."
