"One will be happy. One won't," Dusty Baker said.
Baker sends Homer Bailey to the mound on his 26th birthday. His mound opponent, Ryan Dempster, who pitched for Baker as the Cubs manager, celebrates his 35th birthday.
Dempster is also a former Reds pitcher in 2002 and 2003.
The matchup came to gather in an unusual manner. Bailey was scheduled to start Wednesday night but a rain out on Tuesday pushed him back to his birthday.
Dempster had been on the disabled list with a strained right quad and reinstated in time to pitch on his birthday.
Dempster pitched on his birthday a year ago, logging seven innings of one-run baseball. The Cubs won 4-1 but he was not involved in the decision.
Bailey has never pitched on his birthday at the major league level.
