Edgar Renteria hit his ninth career grand slam. Homer Bailey recovered from the worst start of his career.
The pair combined to erase the bitter memory of an extra-inning loss downing the New Houston Astros, 5-1
Houston's starter Wandy Rodriguez pitches the Reds tough but the Reds scored five times in the fifth inning and Bailey breezed through Houston's young hitters.
Chris Heisey started the winning rally with a double. Ramon Hernandez hit a ground rule double to plate Heisey.
After Todd Frazier, getting his first start in leftfield to give Jay Bruce a rest, grounded out.
Bailey drew a walk after falling behind 0-2. The young pitcher fouled off four pitches in a nine pitch at bat. It was the key to the rally. Drew Stubbs walked on five pitches. Rodriguez was laboring with his curveball. He couldn't throw it for strikes and started Renteria with one that missed the strike zone. The veteran Renteria knew what was coming and drilled a fastball, hitting into the cozy Crawford boxes.
Bailey needed no more runs to work with.
Bailey allowed just five hits but three came in the bottom of the fifth. Jimmy Paredes, Carlos Corporan and Luis Durango hit singles to score a their lone run.
Bailey pitched eight innings, helping to refresh the Reds bullpen
Aroldis Chapman made quick work of the Astros in the ninth, striking out two with the fanning of Paredes the clincher. Chapman has not allowed a hit in his last 9 2/3 innings. He has allowed one walk and retired 28 of the last 29 batters he's faced.
