It was January 19, 2017, the Reds sent Dan Strailey to the Florida Marlins for a minor league pitcher the Reds thought was a future ace.
Luis Castillo that minor league pitcher painfully reminded the Reds of that fact with seven shut down innings on one hit and 10 strikeouts with a pair of walks, in a 5-0 triumph in the Chicago White Sox win.
The White Sox beefed up its pitching by trading for Castillo, sending Boston Smith, Seranthony Diminguez and Nolan Jones to the Seattle Mariners on August 2.
Castillo won 44 games in six seasons with the Reds, his best being a 15-8 year in 2019. The Reds traded him at the 2022,deadline for Edwin Arroyo and Noelvi Marte.
Castillo faced off against new Reds prospect Rhett Lowder, who has started three games that the Reds won.
White Sox catcher Drew Romo provided all the run support Castillo needed with his sixth home run of the season in the third inning.
Lowder got the first batter in the sixth inning but Colson Montgomery singled. Julian Garcia replaced Lowder and Chase Merdroth sent his 12th home run into left field stands.
Lowder finished 5 1/3 innings giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out four.
The Reds meager offense amounted to two singles by Sal Stewart. He got the lone hit off Castillo with a first inning single. Stewart also hit a harmless single against Huascar Brozoban in the ninth.
Sam Moll pitched a scoreless seventh.
Newly acquired Ron Marinaccio walked two batters allowed Romo’s RBI single and threw a wild pitch both with two outs to finish the scoring.
